Further Six Sigma?

The term "Six Sigma" was conceptualized and coined by Motorola Inc. In the mid 80’s a team of brilliant business strategiest from Motorola concurred that an effective combination of structured and organized brainstorming tools and methodologies, combined with quantitative sciences [ statistics, probability and mathematics ] had the potential to transform businesses, providing them a quantum leap in performance and growth.

When the idea of  Six Sigma first came up at Motorola , the application domain of statistical quality assurance , statistical process control and process capability had been prevalent in the manufacturing industry since the mid 70’s, but was usually being employed on a adhoc tactical level.

Heavily borrowing from these two domains and innovatively packaging it with other visualization based brainstorming tools at one end of the spectrum and advanced statistical & mathematical models at the other end of the spectrum.....Motorola coined the term  "Six Sigma". In the mid 90’s Jack Welch of GE adopted and fine-tuned it even further. In about a decade of its adoption six sigma transformed GE into the most valuable company in the world.

Ever since six sigma has been continuously evolving into an exceedingly powerful and effective bandwagon for driving business improvement, growth and quality.

By squarely focusing on a "fixed statistical process capability target" of 6 sigma i.e 3.4 defects per million opportunities for defects, Jack brought together non quantitative, semi quantitative and quantitative subjects to work in synchronization to achieve a common target of a mathematically defined and measurable metric in process capability.

Do Six Sigma Initiatives Really lead to Six Sigma Process Capability

As six sigma is fundamentally based on the subjects of statistical process control and process capability, the target of "six sigma" is primarily achieved by identifying and minimizing variation in a process. However as surprising as it may sound 99% of Six sigma initiatives do not or cannot achieve this level of process capability,  because this is offset by the cost involved, inherit nature of the process, technical limitations, ROI factors, inherit process design.....however despite this constraint  most six sigma projects lead to the process capability improvements of around 100%, and consistently achieve a target of around 4.5 sigma level...however improvements depend on a number of factors and co-factors and are heavily process specific.

Fundamentals Behind the Success Of Six Sigma

The principal cause for the astounding success of six sigma lies in its ability to be be directly quantified in financial terms. The success of six sigma lies in the fact that each dollar invested in any six sigma project can be tracked and quantified in ROI terms in the project design phase itself via a probabilistic simulation approach.

Six Sigma For The Services Industry Too

Six sigma has its historical genesis in manufacturing oriented processes, since physical parts yield to easier quantification, alteration and observation compared to the services industry , however six sigma can also be and has been seamlessly applied across the entire spectrum of services domain with powerful results and immensely profitable results.

As a matter of fact six sigma can be applied to almost any process across the entire conceivable spectrum in the eco-sphere as long as the process is quantifiable and manipulable.
